Child Obesity And The Factors Which Result In Children Being Obese

With obesity rates continuing to soar in many Western countries it is perhaps no surprise that we are seeing a growing number of overweight children. But precisely what is it that produces obesity in children?
As is so often the case there is no single cause of childhood obesity and there are a number of things that result in obesity in children.
For instance, it is usually the case that a child whose parents are overweight or obese will be overweight or obese which suggests that there could be a genetic or inherited element to obesity. But, despite the fact that this is an area that is now being considered, no genetic link has been established so far and it is thought far more likely that it is the diet and eating habits of the family that result in obesity rather than genetics.
We have seen a marked change in eating habits in the past few years with fast food restaurants appearing on every corner, junk food available just about everywhere and our supermarket shelves bulging with so-called 'convenience' foods that are more often than not very high in sugar. The days when we enjoyed home cooking are far behind us in most homes and have been superceded by microwave meals or take-away food. Indeed, a growing number of parents are now choosing to take their children out for a hamburger instead of preparing a meal at home not only because it is easier than cooking a meal but also because it saves on the washing up!
We have also seen a very marked drop in activity levels for many groups of children, aided in no small degree by the introduction of homecomputers, video gaming machines and now the ever present mobile phone. Of course, as activity levels have dropped so children have lost their natural ability to burn off the calories gained from eating a growing quantity of junk food.
Magazine, television, the Internet and other forms of media also play a part as they all but dominate the lives of our kids and fast food, junk food and candy manufacturers are not slow in jumping onto this particular bandwagon and take full advantage of the advertising opportunity that the media provides. A lot of people argue that commercials have done more to encourage the rise in child obesity that just about anything else in the past few years.
There are also clearly several psychological factors at play in the world today and many children today will simply eat as a result of boredom. In addition, they will turn to food whenever they find themselves stressed, angry, anxious or depressed.
Nowadays a lot of research is being directed towards the causes of child obesity and its treatment and most of this research is aimed at solving the problem using a combination of diet and exercise once confronted with an obese child. But, with childhood obesity continuing to grow at such an alarming rate, perhaps the time has come to tackle the roots of the problem and to stop our children from becoming obese in the first place.
