The Commissioning

The origins of the SEALs can be traced back to World War II when units called the Amphibious Scouts and Raiders were used for demolition work. These Navy Frogmen distinguished themselves in all fields of battle during the War.

Finally, it was in the year 1961, that President John F. Kennedy authorized the formation of the U.S Navy SEALs.

The BUD/S

All Navy SEALs aspirants have to go through the grueling BUD/S training that is Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL. This six month course is a test of endurance, strength, and all round resolve.

Not many candidates are able to clear the training regimen and leave the US Navy SEALs course mid-way. Moreover, the final pass percentage is very low and you really have to perform well to become a Navy SEAL.

The Missions

The whole concept of special operation revolves around the use of small, specialized, and deadly units on missions. Their superb and intensive training enables them to be effective in all environments and they are the undisputed masters in the field of special operations.

Operational Areas

US Navy SEALs are a tactical force that is geared to provide a strategic impact. Their operational capability lies in areas like counter terrorism, special reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, direct action, irregular warfare, amongst a host of others.

The Distinguishing Feature

US Navy SEALs are a part of the United States Navy and hence belong to the maritime Special Forces. . More often than not, they strike from the sea and also return by way of the sea.

The Assignment

When a candidate enters the second phase of training, he has to indicate his team of choice. Once you become a part of a particular team, you will be given various duties that will take you on missions across the world.

Navy SEALs Creed

Navy SEALs follow a doctrine that honors the service to country above all else. According to the SEAL creed, Navy SEALs have only one duty, which is to serve their country, its people, and their way of life.

To Become a Navy SEAL

Civilian recruits, naval service men, navy reservists, navy veterans, other service veterans, and officers can apply for becoming a US Navy SEAL provided they meet all the requirements that are a pre-requisite.

The ASVB

Prior to enlistment, all Navy SEALs aspirants have to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVB). The grades or marks in the test would indicate the candidate’s intellectual feasibility of becoming a Navy SEAL.

Some of the notable Navy SEALs that have had a distinguished career are, amongst others, Roy Boehm, Rudy Boesch, Dennis Chalker, Richard Marcinko etc.
